Halloween was busy in Bristol. Pocket Sun launched Watercolours at Strange Brew, the Thunderbolt had its Spooktacular and Moor Beer Co had a four-band heavy bill, all on the same night. With Bonfire Night just behind us, the air’s colder and there’s still plenty to head out for.
For our Bonfire Night edition we’re starting at The Golden Lion with Rank’s Saturday launch. On the record side, The Chikara Project’s Connections Vol. 4 leads the week, with Lost and Found Society’s “Acquiescence” our one to put on when the fireworks die down.
GIG HIGHLIGHTS
This weekend in Bristol
Rank’s album launch · Saturday 7 November
Bristol hardcore punk at The Golden Lion. Rank celebrate Guilt Parade with VØTIV, Blind Eye and more on the bill. The album came out on 2 October, and Saturday is its hometown launch show. Doors 6pm.
Nearly three years on from the previous instalment, The Chikara Project’s Connections series returns with 14 tracks. Mystic State open with Kiah on “Timed Out”, Third Degree gets a solo turn on “More”, and the two reconnect on “You Are Loved”, which we picked out last week. Stick around for Method Sound’s closer “Shoreline”.
Make time for “To A God (Compassion)”, a standout collaboration between Bristol’s Run Logan Run and Gina Leonard of Mumble Tide. Leonard’s voice brings an intimate edge to saxophonist and producer Andrew Neil Hayes’s expansive sound. Bristol filmmaker Chris Lucas directs the new video. Catch both acts at Strange Brew on 2 December.
A 16-track album with room to breathe. The two intermissions break up a long arc that takes in “Sing Me to Sleep”, “Twin Suns” and “Red Moon Rise”. One to play through on the walk home.
One to watch. “Acquiescence” is the standout for us. There’s a recognisably Bristol trip-hop mood to it, right up against the weight of metal. The contrast gives the track its pull and makes this six-track release worth sitting with.
Bristol’s TheLateNightPharmacy puts two crate-dug edits, “BLINDLOVE” and “GOSPEL”, onto its second release. The project describes the series as a not-for-profit venture rooted in DJ and vinyl culture.
A two-track Nota Fortis release that puts the title cut next to “Analyse”. A compact listen if you’re digging through the week’s independent label releases.
Metanoia returns to Neuroheadz with three tracks that put the groove up front. Try “Selecta” after the title track for another dose of rolling neurofunk.
A softer landing for the first properly cold evenings. Across four tracks for Squares Music, Poj lets the atmosphere settle in, from “Voyage” through to “Infinity”.
Two Bristol label cuts from Molecular and DLR. “Jericho” goes straight for the dance floor, while “Smoke Screen” leaves more room for the drums and bass to find their groove.
A lovely early taste of the colder months from Bristol vocalist Victoria Klewin. The four-track collection pairs the title song with “Sleigh Ride”, “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and “In the Bleak Midwinter”. Due 24 November.
An archive of demos, experiments and radio recordings from roughly 2008–14, including several versions of “Take Me Anywhere” and a cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Walking the Cow”. Due 1 December.
Bristol’s PLAQUE links up with Grenoble’s Notte Brigante for a 12-track HLM38 LP. The labels describe a dub-noir record with western whistles and disembodied radio voices. Due 4 December.
The seventh studio album from The Drain On The Balcony, released through Bristol’s Local Underground and produced and engineered by Rocker. Two tracks are available through the pre-order. Due 23 November.
A six-track EP that arrived just before this week’s window. “The Garden” opens a collection that takes in “Skies of Pink & Red” before closing with “The Magpie”.
MIDNIGHT CVLT’s Neuroheadz debut pairs two drum & bass cuts built around intricate, abrasive sound design. It landed in October and makes a good companion to Metanoia’s new EP.
Ahead of their Thursday 19 November return to Exchange, brothers Jack and Harry Dacey talk about their dad’s record collection, making music on their own terms and why they love playing Bristol.
Mark Springer & Jimmy Galvin · Thursday 26 November
A double headline at The Mount Without. Both pianists perform solo and with the Bristol University Music Society string orchestra, with Isadora Vibes and a surprise guest. Starts 7pm.
Run Logan Run & Mumble Tide · Wednesday 2 December
The collaborators behind “To A God (Compassion)” share a bill at Strange Brew, with guests and collaborations promised by promoter Ankh Sanctuary. Starts 7pm.
